August > January

Pictures taken at the same place,
the first in August 2004...

...and the second in January 2008.

  1. Quelle désolation! Whatever happened to the forest? Clear cutting? A bug infestation? A tornado? A new development?

  2. They came and cut down all the hardwood trees in that section of woods about two years ago. I assume the wood was destined to be burned in fireplaces and wood stoves. The evergreen trees are still standing, and new hardwoods are quickly replacing the old ones.

    No new development, thank goodness.

  3. It must have been taken at a different hour. The sun looks so much warmer in the summer but I like the tints of winter. It does convey a sense of loss.

  4. Claudia, both these pictures were taken in the morning. I can tell from the shadows in the Aug. 2004 photo, and from the light in the Jan. 2008 pic. The sun rises farther in the north in summertime, so the direction the light is coming from is not exactly the same.

  5. Yikes! Looks scary...

Did you know that there is a beetle infestation in the evergreens in the Rockies that is supposed to just about devastate the forests? Last summer about 30% of the trees around Vail were brown; this year the number is supposed to be much greater.

Somehow dead trees (and chopped ones) are sad, aren't they?

I'm heading back up to the tomatoes...

    Meilleurs voeux!!
